R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, For her dedication to historical preservation, Eliza Bishop has received the Crockett Area Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Award; and WHEREAS, A former news commentator and editor of the local newspaper, Ms. Bishop has been active in promoting tourism and historical development in Houston County since 1937; and WHEREAS, A native of Crockett, this remarkable woman has secured more than 265 historical markers for the county by writing articles, documenting sites, attending meetings, and dispensing literature that describes the unique history of this region of the Lone Star State; and WHEREAS, Born in June 1920, Ms. Bishop graduated from Crockett High School and the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and also studied at the University of Indiana, Ohio State University, The University of Texas, and Texas A&M University; during the course of her education, she developed a deep reverence for the past, which prompted a lifelong commitment to preserving her hometown's legacy; and WHEREAS, The Houston County Historical Commission has benefited from her unique insights and breadth of knowledge, and the David Crockett Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas owes its existence to Ms. Bishop's initiative; a lifetime member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, she has served as president of Texas Press Women and has been recognized by the Texas Historical Foundation for her work with the Texas Heritage Project; and WHEREAS, Ms. Bishop has received numerous honors for her dedication to community service, including the John Ben Shepperd County Historical Commission Leadership Award from the Texas Historical Commission, the Distinguished Service Award from the American Heart Association, and the Woman of Achievement award from Texas Press Women; and WHEREAS, The strength and vitality of our communities depend on the enthusiastic commitment of individuals like Eliza Bishop, who has contributed to the education of countless Texans through her work to ensure a lasting record of the contributions of Houston County in the annals of history; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Eliza Bishop on her receipt of the Crockett Area Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Award and commend her for her lifelong dedication to preserving the area's rich history; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Bishop as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
