H.R. No. 985


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Tomas Cantu of Fronton has greatly contributed to the improved environmental health of the Rio Grande Valley through his many years of community leadership and advocacy; and WHEREAS, A resident of Roma for most of his life, Mr. Cantu lent his expertise to the Municipal Solid Waste Management and Resource Recovery Advisory Council of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality for six years; he also served as the city's solid waste and environmental coordinator from 1980 to 2002; in these pivotal roles, he worked closely with civic organizations, neighboring communities, and area schools to implement programs that will undoubtedly benefit Texans for generations to come; and WHEREAS, Some of his accomplishments include founding and serving as task leader of the Roma Proud Community Awareness on recycling and illegal dumping, and initiating the sale of recycled cardboard and paper to Mexico; moreover, he was highly instrumental in the success of the Environmental Awareness Program that began in Starr County schools and the Trash Bash; Mr. Cantu's notable efforts have benefited not only Roma, but many surrounding communities in both the Rio Grande Valley and Mexico, as they have adopted many of the programs that he initiated; and WHEREAS, In addition, this dynamic Texan helped ensure the success of the Rio Reforestation project of the National Wildlife Refuge System by working with the American Red Cross, the Roma VFW Post No. 9175, and area school districts; currently, he serves on the advisory board for Colonias Unidas, the Valley Proud Environmental Council, and the Solid Waste Advisory Council Committee for the South Texas Development Council; and WHEREAS, Tomas Cantu is an inspiration to all who are privileged to know him, and his important work has undoubtedly helped in ensuring the health and vitality of his community; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby commend Tomas Cantu on his service to the Municipal Solid Waste Management and Resource Recovery Advisory Council and to the City of Roma and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued achievement; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Cantu as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
