R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Robert Gillette of Baytown has established a
commendable record of leadership in his community through his
professional achievements and civic engagement; and
WHEREAS, Appointed to the Port of Houston Authority
Commission by the Harris County Mayors' and Councils' Association
in 1987, Mr. Gillette rendered exceptional service to that body
during his tenure, which concluded in 1999; a longtime board member
and former president of the Baytown Water Authority, he further
distinguished himself on the board of managers of City-County
Hospital and the Harris County Hospital District, and his
volunteerism was deservedly recognized when he was named 1983
Citizen of the Year by The Baytown Sun newspaper; and
WHEREAS, An alumnus of The University of Texas at Austin and
cum laude graduate of the South Texas School of Law, this World War
II veteran helped establish the Baytown law firm of Reid,
Strickland and Gillette in 1946 and served as managing partner for
30 years until his 1987 retirement; and
WHEREAS, In the late 1980s, Mr. Gillette was appointed by
U.S. Attorney General Edwin Meese to the People to People Citizens
Ambassador Program, which paired attorneys and other professionals
from this nation with their Beijing, China, counterparts in an
effort to hone legal and trade agreements of benefit to both
countries; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Gillette's good works in behalf of his fellow
Baytown residents have involved his participation in and leadership
of an array of arts, sports, health, and service organizations; the
initial director of the Baytown Crime Stoppers program, he has
chaired the Lee College Foundation, led the Baytown Chamber of
Commerce and the Baytown Lions Club as president, and served as
commander of American Legion Post No. 323, among his many civic
involvements; and
WHEREAS, An exemplary citizen and mentor to countless
individuals, Bob Gillette has long demonstrated a strong commitment
to the betterment of his community, state, and nation; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby commend Robert Gillette for his many years of
exemplary public service and extend to him sincere best wishes for
continued happiness; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. Gillette as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
