R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Honorable Moises V. Vela of Harlingen is
receiving due recognition for his exemplary community service with
the dedication on April 9, 2005, of an elementary school named in
his honor; and
WHEREAS, A native of Harlingen, Judge Vela graduated from
Harlingen High School in 1947, and he earned his associate's degree
from Texas Southmost College in Brownsville and his law degree from
St. Mary's University in San Antonio; he has practiced law for 50
years and has served as assistant district attorney, county judge,
and judge; and
WHEREAS, Judge Vela has also distinguished himself as a
member of the board of regents of Pan American University and as one
of the original directors of Plaza National Bank, and he has served
as a member of the County Historical Association, the Texas
Commission on Alcoholism, and the local American Legion post; a
true patriot, he valiantly served his country in the Korean War as
an infantry battalion information and operations sergeant; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his distinguished career, Judge Vela has
demonstrated a deep commitment to helping area youth through
schools and other service projects; an active member of the PTA, the
Band Booster Club, and the Quarterback Club, he coached Little
League sports for 15 years; during his tenure as judge, he initiated
mock teen trials and juries and established community service as an
alternative to fine payment for young offenders; and
WHEREAS, A spiritual and caring individual, Moises Vela is
truly an inspiration to all those whose lives have been enriched by
his commitment to the youth of Harlingen, and it is a pleasure to
honor his accomplishments on this special occasion; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate the Honorable Moises V. Vela on the
dedication of the Moises V. Vela Elementary School and extend to him
sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Judge Vela as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
