R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Dogs play an important role in the lives of many
Texas citizens by serving as companions, therapy dogs, and
assistance dogs; and
WHEREAS, While dogs contribute to the well-being of many
Texans, concern about pet bites and animal trespassing is on the
rise, and it is recognized that dog-related problems are most often
caused by irresponsible owners; and
WHEREAS, The Canine Good Citizen program was developed by the
American Kennel Club to help owners train their dogs to exhibit
"good citizen" behaviors in the presence of other people and
animals, both at home and in public; dogs and their owners
participate in CGC classes and educational events through such
groups as PAWS, a national organization with Texas volunteers; and
WHEREAS, Training together helps to build a closer bond
between a dog and its owner, and both dogs and owners benefit
greatly when dogs understand and reliably demonstrate acceptable
behavior; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby endorse the American Kennel Club Canine Good
Citizen program, encourage dog trainers and kennel clubs to provide
the training in their communities, and urge all Texans who own dogs
to take advantage of this outstanding resource.
