R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Dogs play an important role in the lives of many Texas citizens by serving as companions, therapy dogs, and assistance dogs; and WHEREAS, While dogs contribute to the well-being of many Texans, concern about pet bites and animal trespassing is on the rise, and it is recognized that dog-related problems are most often caused by irresponsible owners; and WHEREAS, The Canine Good Citizen program was developed by the American Kennel Club to help owners train their dogs to exhibit "good citizen" behaviors in the presence of other people and animals, both at home and in public; dogs and their owners participate in CGC classes and educational events through such groups as PAWS, a national organization with Texas volunteers; and WHEREAS, Training together helps to build a closer bond between a dog and its owner, and both dogs and owners benefit greatly when dogs understand and reliably demonstrate acceptable behavior; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby endorse the American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen program, encourage dog trainers and kennel clubs to provide the training in their communities, and urge all Texans who own dogs to take advantage of this outstanding resource.
