R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The members and friends of Pinecrest Presbyterian Church in Houston are celebrating the 80th anniversary of the church's founding on June 12, 2005; and WHEREAS, The congregation traces its history to April 1925, when the Reverend James Henry Monroe Boyce established Gregg Street Presbyterian, the first church of its denomination in the historic Fifth Ward of Houston; it was later renamed Pinecrest Presbyterian Church, and in March 1951, a dedication service was held for a new building at 4913 Market Street, which remains the church home today; and WHEREAS, Since its inception, Pinecrest has sought to serve its members and neighbors in the wider community; under the leadership of Reverend Boyce, elected the first African American minister moderator of the Brazos Presbytery, Pinecrest developed the first Boy Scout troop for African Americans in Houston, as well as a Hi-Yi chapter, Girls' Vocation Guidance Club, and vacation Bible school, and during World War II, the church was involved with a well-baby clinic and a nutrition center; subsequent outreach efforts have included the Leavesley Education Center, a preschool, a thrift store, nutrition and sewing classes, computer education, a summer enrichment program, youth employment training, refugee resettlement, and a housing rehabilitation project; and WHEREAS, The church has greatly benefited from the good works of its dedicated pastors and congregants, including the Reverend J. Daniel Intsiful, a native of Ghana, who answered the call to the Pinecrest pulpit six months ago, and such noted members as Joyce Punch, the first woman elected a moderator of the Brazos Presbytery, and Cheryl Maddox and her family, who are currently serving as missionaries in Zaire; and WHEREAS, Pinecrest Presbyterian Church continues to be a blessing in the lives of countless Texans, and it is a pleasure to join in honoring the church on this special event in its proud history; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Pinecrest Presbyterian Church on the joyous occasion of its 80th anniversary and extend best wishes to everyone involved for a meaningful and memorable observance; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the church as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
