H.R. No. 1044


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, With an impressive career in journalism and a record of community service, George Bud Easter Johnson of Houston has made an indelible impact on his community; and WHEREAS, Born on January 7, 1934, in Houston, Bud Johnson attended Carver High School and Texas Southern University, and began working as a shipping clerk for the Informer and as a writer for the Reporter; in 1955, he was promoted to cover the police beat for the Informer, and he soon discovered he had a knack for sports reporting and became one of the first African American sportswriters for a daily newspaper; and WHEREAS, In addition to writing a column for the Houston Press, Mr. Johnson served as a correspondent for the Houston Post and as sports editor and managing editor of the Forward Times, and he founded his own publication, Sports World; he officially retired in 1996 but continues to serve as managing editor emeritus of African American News & Issues; and WHEREAS, This noteworthy writer has also made important contributions to his community by serving as a counselor of troubled youth; he has received several awards for his service and professionalism, including the Outstanding Black Texan Award for professionals and the Volunteers in Public Schools Distinguished "Living Historian" award; and WHEREAS, A true original who has paved the way for many aspiring African American journalists, Bud Johnson has served the Houston area as a dedicated volunteer and as a trusted voice in the news, and it is a pleasure to pay tribute to his accomplishments; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby honor George Bud Easter Johnson for his professional achievements and civic contributions and extend to him sincere best wishes for health and happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Johnson as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
