R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Kerron Clement, a former track star at La Porte High School, set a new indoor world record in the 400-meter sprint at the 2005 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships held in Fayetteville, Arkansas; and WHEREAS, A 19-year-old sophomore at the University of Florida, Mr. Clement bested the world record set by Olympian Michael Johnson in 1995, eclipsing that mark with a time of 44.57 seconds; moreover, he also helped set a new collegiate record as the anchor of his school's 4x400-meter relay team, which posted a time of 3:03.51; and WHEREAS, Mr. Clement, who was formerly best known as a hurdler, burst onto the national scene during his years as a student at La Porte High School, where he dominated the 110- and 300-meter hurdling events and was named the Gatorade Texas High School Boys Track and Field "Athlete of the Year" as a senior; the Trinidad native, who became a U.S. citizen in 2004, is the reigning world junior and NCAA 400-meter hurdles champion and is a vital member of the University of Florida's track and field program; and WHEREAS, The world of competitive track and field expects to see great things from this talented young man as he continues to hone his natural gifts through hard work and dedication, and it is a pleasure to recognize the Lone Star State's newest world record holder; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby commend Kerron Clement on his record-setting performance at the 2005 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships and extend best wishes to him for continued success in all his endeavors; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Clement as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
