R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The U.S.-Mexican Border Health Commission, the Pan American Organization/World Health Organization, the Texas Department of State Health Services, the Tamaulipas Department of Health Services, and the City of Brownsville are celebrating World Health Day 2005 on April 7; and WHEREAS, The existing and emerging collaborations between governments, health authorities, health care providers, community service providers, and consumers in Texas and Mexico enhance the efforts to improve the health and well-being of individuals on both sides of the border; and WHEREAS, The theme for World Health Day 2005 is healthy mothers and children, with the slogan, "Make every mother and child count," and the event promotes the health of women and children as a priority for the governments and the international community; and WHEREAS, Women and children on both sides of the border need comprehensive, integrated, culturally appropriate, high–quality preventive health and medical care services; and WHEREAS, The concept of promotoras and community health workers, long popular in Mexico and now active in Texas, provides an effective means of educating women and families on primary health care, prenatal care, breast–feeding, and healthy behaviors to improve overall health; and WHEREAS, World Health Day 2005 is expected to raise awareness, increase understanding, generate enthusiasm, and most of all result in action that will improve the survival, health, and well-being of mothers and their children; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby recognize April 7, 2005, as World Health Day 2005 and extend best wishes to all its participants for a meaningful observance.
