R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The certain knowledge of a life well lived may temper the profound sadness that the passing of Warden John Newell of Richardson on August 21, 2003, at the age of 68, brought to all who loved this esteemed gentleman; and WHEREAS, A native of the Lone Star State, Mr. Newell was born in Alice and raised in Alpine, where he was valedictorian of his graduating class; he went on to attend Princeton University and earned his bachelor's degree from The University of Texas in 1956; and WHEREAS, Mr. Newell had a distinguished career with Chance Vought Aircraft, and he was involved with the design and development of some of the earliest solid-state electronics, worked on the design of guidance and control systems for aircraft and missiles, and made substantial contributions to the Lance Missile; after 40 years of service, he retired as director of system engineering from Lockheed Martin Vought Systems in 1996; and WHEREAS, Passionate about music, this talented Texan began playing the trumpet at the age of six and continued into his retirement years; he played in the Grand Prairie, Irving, and Garland Symphony Orchestras and served as the first president of the Richardson Community Band, of which he was a member for more than 20 years; and WHEREAS, Warden Newell was a devoted husband and father whose creativity, enthusiasm, and ingenuity endeared him to many, and while he is deeply missed, his spirit lives on in the hearts of the people whose lives he touched; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby honor the life of Warden John Newell and extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Helen Tweed Newell; to his children, Kate Torrance, Anita Newell, John Newell III, Robert Newell, Mark Newell, Jerry Newell, Guy Davis, Melanie Acosta, and Stephanie Schroeder; to his daughters-in-law, Kathy Newell and Kristan Davis; to his sons-in-law, Jad Torrance, Joel Acosta, and Jamie Schroeder; to his siblings, Laura Pattillo, Joanna Cowell and her husband, Lee, David Newell and his wife, Malia, and Tom Van Auken and his wife, Nancy; to his grandchildren, Loretta and Meredith Newell, Emily, Evelyn, Lane, and Luke Acosta, and Madeleine and Grant Davis; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Warden John Newell.
