R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The certain knowledge of a life well lived may help
to comfort the friends and family of George H. O'Brien, Jr., of
Midland who died on March 11, 2005, at the age of 78; and
WHEREAS, A native of the Lone Star State, Mr. O'Brien was born
on September 10, 1926, in Fort Worth and was raised and educated in
Big Spring; after graduating from high school, he pursued his
higher education at Texas Tech University, earning his bachelor's
degree in geology; and
WHEREAS, He went on to serve his country with distinction
during the Korean War as a rifle platoon commander of Company H,
Third Battalion, Seventh Marines, First Marine Division
(Reinforced); a man of exceptional valor, he was awarded the Medal
of Honor in 1952 for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the
risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty; and
WHEREAS, Mr. O'Brien married the former Sandra Rogers Holland
on July 28, 1979, and together they shared a quarter-century of
marriage and the love of six children; and
WHEREAS, Active in his community, he enjoyed membership in
the Medal of Honor Society, the Marine Scholarship, and the
American Association of Petroleum Geologists; and
WHEREAS, Those who were privileged to know George O'Brien
will long miss his presence in their lives, and he will surely be
remembered with great affection for many years to come; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby honor the life of George H. O'Brien, Jr., and
extend deepest sympathy to his family: to his wife, Sandra O'Brien;
to his daughters, Terrye O'Brien, Ann Daugherty and her husband,
Mark, and Dorothy Stillwell and her husband, Frank; to his sons,
Mike O'Brien and his wife, Susan, Robb O'Brien, and Dick Holland and
his wife, Jody; to his brother, Joe O'Brien and his wife, Edith; to
his grandchildren; and to his other relatives and friends; and, be
it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of George H.
O'Brien, Jr.
