                                                                  H.R. No. 1117


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The family and friends of Marcus Fay Vascocu were deeply saddened by his death on February 18, 2005, at the age of 86; and WHEREAS, Born on January 12, 1919, in Natchitoches, Louisiana, Mr. Vascocu moved to Longview as a child and graduated from Longview High School; he studied at The University of Texas at Austin and received a bachelor of business administration degree; he served with distinction in the U.S. Navy during World War II and earned the rank of 2nd lieutenant; and WHEREAS, After the war, Mr. Vascocu attended Southern Methodist University Law School and moved back to Longview, where he practiced law for many years; in 1969, Governor Preston Smith appointed him to be the first judge of the 188th Judicial District Court in Gregg County, where he was involved in some of East Texas' most high profile cases, including two that reached the U.S. Supreme Court; he retired from his judicial post on January 1, 1987; and WHEREAS, A fair and consistent judge who also had a good sense of humor and loved to fish, he was a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Masons, and a longtime congregant of the First Baptist Church in Longview; and WHEREAS, Judge Vascocu positively influenced the lives of countless individuals; he leaves a legacy of personal accomplishments and judicial excellence, and he will not soon be forgotten; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Marcus Fay Vascocu and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife of 63 years, Jacqueline; to his daughters and their husbands, Karen and Jerry Woolf and Ann and Ed Davis; to his granddaughters, Kristin Crawford and her husband, Kevin, and Lindsey Woolf; to his grandsons, Marc Davis and Scott Davis; to his sister, Naomi Kilgore; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Judge Marcus Fay Vascocu.
