R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, For his selfless actions in saving the life of a
child, Waxahachie resident Fred Bryant has been honored with the
Carnegie Medal by the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission; and
WHEREAS, Founded in 1904 by industrialist and philanthropist
Andrew Carnegie, the Carnegie Hero Fund honors those who risk their
lives to an extraordinary degree while attempting to save the lives
of others; and
WHEREAS, On May 18, 2003, Mr. Bryant and his wife, Carol,
witnessed the collision of a tractor-trailer and a car carrying a
family of four on Interstate 35E near Red Oak; following the impact,
the car and the tractor-trailer caught fire, and Mr. Bryant
immediately pulled off of the road to lend assistance; and
WHEREAS, While Mr. Bryant initially believed that no one in
the car had survived the accident, he heard the sounds of a child's
cries and discovered two-year-old Daniel Oh in the backseat;
ignoring the menacing blaze inside the vehicle, Mr. Bryant
maneuvered himself through the broken windshield and attempted to
retrieve the child; unsuccessful at first, he procured a knife from
a bystander and sliced through a restraining belt, freeing young
Daniel moments before the car was engulfed in flames; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Bryant also played a vital role in saving
Daniel's life; a pediatric nurse practitioner, she tended to
Daniel's injuries, which included two broken legs, a broken arm,
and damage to his neck; the child was subsequently flown to
Children's Medical Center of Dallas for treatment and has since
recovered; and
WHEREAS, By risking his own life to save another, Mr. Bryant
demonstrated remarkable courage and generosity, and his act of
valor exemplified the most admirable qualities of the human spirit;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby commend Fred Bryant for his exceptional bravery
in the face of danger and congratulate him on his receipt of the
prestigious Carnegie Medal from the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission;
and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. Bryant as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
