R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Throughout the years, the Lone Star State's rich cultural heritage has produced a remarkable variety of artists and craftsmen, and these talented Texans deserve our deepest gratitude and admiration; Charles William Shaw is one such artist, and it is appropriate at this time to recognize his many contributions to the fields of art and literature in Texas; and WHEREAS, Born in Austin in 1941, Charley Shaw graduated from Travis High School and went on to study life drawing for three years with the illustrator Malcolm Thurgood; and WHEREAS, Typical subjects for this accomplished artist are Texas frontier lifestyles and historical scenes, children, and musicians, and his preferred mediums are watercolors and oils; and WHEREAS, Mr. Shaw has produced hundreds of illustrations of historical subjects for books, brochures, and articles over a span of more than 45 years; he was commissioned by The University of Texas Press to draw 248 images for the first edition of James Michener's two-volume historical epic, Texas; he wrote and illustrated Indian Life in Texas, and he recently published illustrations for From a Watery Grave: The Discovery and Excavation of La Salle's Shipwreck, La Belle; his work also appears in numerous children's books, including Little Johnny Raindrop, That's What Love Is, and the Walt Disney Davy Crockett series; and WHEREAS, In addition to his book illustrations, this gifted artist has produced a collection of paintings depicting the Texas Revolution for the San Jacinto Museum of History in Houston, which are used as teaching tools for schoolchildren, and he recently completed a series of large paintings depicting the history of Seton Hospital in Austin; his work hangs in the collections of the Franklin Mint, the King Ranch, the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame, UT Press, the Barker Texas History Center, Texas A&M Press, and the Star of the Republic Museum; moreover, in 1996, a representative collection of his work was placed in the permanent collection of the Longview Museum of Fine Arts; and WHEREAS, Mr. Shaw is also a contributor to a unique website, Texas Beyond History, a public education service of the UT Texas Archeological Research Laboratory and a virtual museum interpreting and sharing the state's vast cultural legacy; and WHEREAS, Widely admired for his immense talent, Charley Shaw is one of our state's most distinguished native sons, and it is indeed a privilege to recognize his outstanding career as an artist; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby honor Charles William Shaw for generously sharing his extraordinary gifts as an artist with the State of Texas; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Shaw as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
