R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Texas Music Museum, located at 1009 E. 11th Street in historic East Austin, is an ongoing project created and supported by those who believe that the history and culture of Texas are written in its music; and WHEREAS, Established in Texas in 1984 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization, the Texas Music Museum was designated the following year as a Texas Independence Association by the Texas Sesquicentennial Commission for its participation in and contributions to the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Lone Star State; and WHEREAS, Since its premier exhibit and series of music programs to commemorate the sesquicentennial, the Texas Music Museum has conducted extensive interviews, taken photographs, produced music videos, and presented exhibitions, performances, and educational programs encompassing such diverse musical genres as soul, blues, jazz, classical, pop, rock, Tejano, Native American, gospel, Czech, German, western swing, and cowboy/country; and WHEREAS, A member of the National Music Museum Alliance, the Texas Association of Museums, and the Austin Museum Partnership, the Texas Music Museum has made significant progress in its work by coordinating its efforts with other museums across the state; and WHEREAS, Among the members of the Texas Music Museum's board of directors are musicians, writers, music educators, music historians, and representatives of Texas universities whose institutions have major Texas music collections; and WHEREAS, The museum has received financial support for 17 years from the City of Austin, through the city's Cultural Contracts Program, and recently updated a comprehensive strategic plan produced by the Bay Group, a nationally recognized cultural arts consulting corporation; and WHEREAS, In time, organizers hope to develop a world-class museum and performance center to complement the rotating exhibits of Texas music that are currently on display throughout the year; and WHEREAS, The research, preservation, promotion, and presentation of the treasure that is our state's music legacy will enrich the lives of all Texans in the years to come, and the accomplishments of the Texas Music Museum in this regard make it truly worthy of special legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby honor the Texas Music Museum for its contributions to the cultural fabric of the state and commend all those associated with this exceptional endeavor; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the museum as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
