R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, In recognition of National Youth Service Day on
April 15-17, 2005, Children's Legal Services of Houston is hosting
the Kids Clothesline Project to raise awareness of abused and
neglected children in Texas; and
WHEREAS, In 2002, there were approximately 50 child
fatalities resulting from abuse in Harris County and more than 600
active cases in Travis County involving children who were removed
from their homes due to severe abuse, neglect, or abandonment; a
nonprofit organization, Children's Legal Services of Houston works
to provide zealous and informed legal advocacy to children who are
involved in the legal process; and
WHEREAS, With the sponsorship of Youth Service America and
funding by the DisneyHand Minnie Grant, Children's Legal Services
of Houston is sponsoring an art project and exhibit to call
attention to the tragic epidemic of child abuse; the organization
provided T-shirts and art supplies to children in Houston and
Austin area women's shelters and invited them to express their
feelings about and experiences of abuse or neglect, either in words
or pictures, by decorating the T-shirts; those shirts are displayed
in clothesline fashion as testimony to the problem of violence
against children, and they are being exhibited at the Family Law
Center in Houston on April 14 and at the State Capitol in Austin on
April 15; and
WHEREAS, One of the most important tools in eliminating child
abuse and neglect is public awareness, and through the Kids
Clothesline Project, Children's Legal Services of Houston is
helping to change the way our communities view and address violence
against children; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby commend Children's Legal Services of Houston for
their admirable efforts to raise awareness of child abuse and
neglect in Texas through the Kids Clothesline Project on National
Youth Service Day; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Children's Legal Services of Houston as an expression
of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
