R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Ted Bender was honored in January 2005 by the Martin Luther King, Jr., Committee of El Paso for his role in helping to end segregation in the city more than four decades ago; and WHEREAS, A resident of El Paso since 1949, Mr. Bender served as an alderman on the city council from 1957 to 1963 and voted for an ordinance in 1962 that ended enforced segregation in public places, including restaurants, motels, and movie theaters; and WHEREAS, The freedoms our citizens enjoy today are not only a testament to the courageous work of the late Dr. King, but also to the efforts of countless men and women like Mr. Bender, whose dedication to justice and racial equality resulted in positive social change; and WHEREAS, Through his leadership and unwavering devotion to establishing a fully inclusive and integrated El Paso, Ted Bender has left an indelible mark on the city he is proud to call home, and it is indeed a pleasure to honor him at this time; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby commend Ted Bender for his work toward desegregation in El Paso and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Bender as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
