R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, For more than three decades, Alicia Chacon has blazed a trail for Hispanic women on the local, state, and national levels, while making significant contributions to the betterment of her community, state, and nation; and WHEREAS, Retired from a seven-year tenure as president of the United Way of El Paso, the former El Paso County Judge has inspired countless residents of the Lone Star State over the course of her career, and her myriad achievements have earned her induction into the El Paso Women's Hall of Fame, the El Paso Democratic Hall of Fame, and the Texas Women's Hall of Fame; and WHEREAS, In 1970, Ms. Chacon became the first Hispanic woman to serve on the Ysleta School Board, in which capacity she worked to promote racial and gender equality; two years later she was the first El Pasoan to serve on the National Democratic Party Committee, and with her election as county clerk in 1975, she became the first woman from El Paso County to earn election to a countywide office; and WHEREAS, In 1978 she was appointed by President Jimmy Carter to serve as the regional director of the Small Business Administration, becoming the first woman in the nation to attain such a position; that role was followed by her 1983 election to the El Paso City Council, representing another landmark victory for Hispanic women; and WHEREAS, The first female county judge of El Paso County, this esteemed public servant was elected to that post in 1991; in all the challenging posts she has held, she has demonstrated integrity and commitment and opened the doors of opportunity for those who would follow in her footsteps; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby commend Alicia Chacon for her legacy of leadership and achievement in public office and extend to her best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Chacon as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
