R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Sam Tasby is being inducted into the African American Education Archives and History Program Educators Hall of Fame in Dallas on April 23, 2005; and WHEREAS, Founded in 2001, the program was initiated by the Dallas Regional, National Alliance of Black School Educators and the African American Museum to create a repository of artifacts, documents, and visual images that chronicle the African American experience in Dallas County and to pay tribute to individuals such as Mr. Tasby who have made significant contributions to African American education in Dallas; and WHEREAS, Mr. Tasby's efforts to bring about positive social change began in the early 1970s; while more than 15 years had passed since the historic Brown v. Board of Education case overturned the "separate but equal" doctrine, Mr. Tasby's children were still forced to attend an all-black school miles from their home even though two white schools were closer; and WHEREAS, Joined by other plaintiffs, Mr. Tasby filed a suit accusing the Dallas Independent School District of continuing to use a dual school system prohibited by law; despite many attempts to dissuade him, Mr. Tasby remained steadfast in his pursuit of justice for his and other African American children, and the lawsuit eventually enforced court oversight of the Dallas ISD; and WHEREAS, This loving father's efforts resulted in more than three decades of work by the district to ensure educational equality for all of its students, and in 2003, the desegregation order was finally lifted; and WHEREAS, An inspiration to all who are privileged to know him, Sam Tasby may take great pride in the profound difference he has made in Dallas and beyond as his efforts have truly enhanced the lives of countless Texans; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Sam Tasby on his induction into the African American Education Archives and History Program Educators Hall of Fame and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Tasby as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
