R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Texas may soon be adding a new name to its roster of
homegrown musical superstars as Gerardo Lopez of Eagle Pass
continues to impress audiences with his exceptional talent; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Lopez was one of 20 gifted musicians selected
among thousands of contestants from across the nation to
participate in the program, "Nuevas Voces de America," or "New
Voices of America"; created by Grammy Award-winning producer Emilio
Estefan for Telemundo, the reality-based program debuted on
February 13, 2005, and continues until May 22, when the winner will
be chosen and awarded a cash prize and a recording contract; and
WHEREAS, The objective of the show is to discover the next
Latino pop star through a selection process in which viewers vote
and contestants undergo intensive vocal training and physical
makeovers; with the U.S. Spanish-language television network
reaching more than 90 percent of Hispanic viewers in America, the
program promotes and showcases young Latino talent at its best and
increases their profile throughout the country; and
WHEREAS, A native of Eagle Pass, Mr. Lopez was born on March
1, 1982, to Gerardo Arturo and Alma A. Lopez; in 1999, he graduated
from Eagle Pass High School-C.C. Winn Campus, where he was a drum
major, a member of the jazz band, and a vocalist for the mariachi
school band, Aguilas de Oro; the 23-year-old recently graduated
from Baylor University with a degree in art design; and
WHEREAS, In addition to his impressive showing for the
Telemundo program, Mr. Lopez has garnered a number of previous
honors, including first place as male vocalist at the 1999 Texas A&M
International University Fiesta de Mariachi competition in Laredo
and first place at a 2001 mariachi competition sponsored by
Lincoln/Ford and Mariachi Vargas in San Antonio; and
WHEREAS, Gerardo Lopez has brought great pride to his family
and community, and it is a tribute to his talent and dedication that
he has achieved wide recognition in the highly competitive
entertainment industry at such a young age; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Gerardo Lopez on his selection as a
contestant on the "Nuevas Voces de America" television program and
extend to him sincere best wishes for success in his promising
musical career; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. Lopez as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
