H.R. No. 1257


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The Leadership Officers Training Corps (LOTC) at Alice Johnson Junior High School in Channelview is an outstanding program that instills in its participating junior high school students strong leadership and study skills; and WHEREAS, Started at Alice Johnson Junior High School in 1996, LOTC is under the able directorship of Colonel Chester Currin, who has helped the program expand to 27 other schools around the state; in addition to engaging in a weekly routine of activities designed to foster intellectual growth, teamwork, and leadership ability, the students practice twice a week after school for competitions with students in ROTC programs, and they average about 20 performances a year outside of school; and WHEREAS, The corps's commitment to academic excellence is evident in that the last three valedictorians from Channelview High School were former LOTC members; in the program, ranks are determined by grade point average every six weeks, and this year, 38 young people achieved the rank of colonel, a level that requires the student to take honors classes, maintain a 5.0 grade point average, and have a conduct grade no lower than "S"; and WHEREAS, By providing students with effective leadership skills, fostering self-confidence, and teaching good study habits, LOTC is helping to set its participants on a path toward a bright and rewarding future; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby honor the Leadership Officers Training Corps at Alice Johnson Junior High School in Channelview and extend to its director, Colonel Chester Currin, and its members best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for LOTC as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
