R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Houston's Mark Twain, Oran Roberts, and River Oaks Elementary Schools have been named International Baccalaureate Elementary Schools, three of the first schools to earn this prestigious accolade in the Lone Star State; and WHEREAS, This designation places these three Houston ISD campuses among an exceptional group of 1,468 schools worldwide and establishes that the institutions are committed to the exemplary academic performance and overall success of their students; and WHEREAS, The designation is conferred by the International Baccalaureate Organization, a nonprofit foundation headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, that works to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect; and WHEREAS, The organization's primary school program for students ages 3 to 12 focuses on the development of the whole child, in the classroom and in the world outside; the curriculum is structured to help young people not only in academics, but also in social, physical, emotional, and cultural areas; and WHEREAS, Mark Twain Principal Joyce Dauber cites a diverse student body representing 50 nations, a Spanish dual language immersion program, and high expectations from parents for their children as factors that contributed to her campus's inclusion in the select category; and WHEREAS, Oran Roberts Principal Sam Sarabia attributes his campus's selection for the honor in part to the long hours, hard work, and creativity of his teaching staff and the focus on preparing students to be competitive on a global scale as they progress in their education, careers, and professions; and WHEREAS, River Oaks Principal Kelly McBride credits the ongoing dedication of her staff combined with vital parental support as major factors in the school's attainment of the exceptional award, as the program has been put in place over the course of the past two years; and WHEREAS, The students, faculty, and parents at Mark Twain, Oran Roberts, and River Oaks Elementary Schools have performed admirably in their quest for educational excellence, and their superlative achievement reflects great honor on their schools and the Houston ISD as well; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate all those affiliated with Mark Twain, Oran Roberts, and River Oaks Elementary Schools on their schools' selection as International Baccalaureate Elementary Schools; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for each school as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
