H.R. No. 1295
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Dr. Sharon E. Jarvis, an assistant professor in the
Department of Communication Studies at The University of Texas at
Austin, has been awarded the Friar Centennial Teaching Fellowship
for 2005; and
WHEREAS, Founded in 1911, the Friar Society is UT's oldest
and most respected honor society, and the Friar Fellowship is the
university's largest award for undergraduate teaching excellence;
created to specifically recognize faculty members who have attained
distinction teaching undergraduates, the award honors recipients
who are nominated by faculty peers and students from all
disciplines; and
WHEREAS, Selected from among more than 2,000 eligible
candidates for the fellowship, Dr. Jarvis has been nominated for
the award every year she has taught at the university, and she is
only the second nontenured faculty member to ever receive the
honor, and only the third recipient in the College of
Communication; and
WHEREAS, Specializing in the study of political
communication from quantitative and qualitative perspectives, Dr.
Jarvis teaches a variety of courses at the undergraduate and
graduate levels, including political communication, campaign
communication, and persuasion theory, and serves as the associate
director of the Annette Strauss Institute for Civic Participation;
and
WHEREAS, She holds a bachelor's degree in political science
from the University of California at Davis, a master's degree in
communication from the University of Arizona, and a Ph.D. in
communication studies from UT; in addition to the Friar Fellowship,
she has received several other teaching awards, including the
College of Communication Outstanding Professor Award, the Eyes of
Texas Excellence in Teaching Award, and the Texas Blazers' Faculty
Excellence Award, as well as a number of research awards and
fellowships; this esteemed scholar currently has a book under
contract titled The Talk of the Party: Political Versus Symbolic
Capital in American Life, 1948-2004; and
WHEREAS, At a time when many universities place a higher
premium on faculty research and publication than on teaching, it is
particularly vital to recognize those professors who excel at what
should be the most important priority of our schools, the education
of our youth; relishing her role as a teacher, Sharon Jarvis has
proven herself a most deserving recipient of this honor; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Sharon E. Jarvis on her receipt
of the Friar Centennial Teaching Fellowship for 2005 and extend to
her sincere best wishes for continued success with her important
work; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Dr. Jarvis as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
