R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Members of the Texas Grain & Feed Association (TGFA) are gathering at the State Capitol on April 26, 2005, to celebrate their organization's accomplishments; and WHEREAS, The TGFA is the oldest trade association and one of the most diverse agricultural organizations in the state; it provides rules and regulations of standards of behavior for its members, representatives from the grain and feed industry, and promotes ethical and credible practices in grain and feed manufacturing; and WHEREAS, In 1898, due to increased corn yields, wheat prices, and market volumes, a growing volume of business encouraged Texas grain dealers to create a more stable and equitable work environment; the grain dealers wanted to create a trade organization that would enforce rules for fair business practices among dealers, millers, and others involved in the purchase and sale of grain; in September 1898, some 40 individuals gathered for the organization of the new Texas Grain Dealers Association under the leadership of elected president J. P. Harrison of Pittman-Harrison Grain Company in Sherman; the first annual meeting of the organization was held in Fort Worth on May 8 and 9, 1899; and WHEREAS, Members of the association developed the rules of trade, still in use today, and the constitution, which declared a mission statement: the Texas Grain Dealers Association would seek to establish uniform standards of weights and grades, regulate freight rates, protect against unjust claims, and advance and protect the common interests of grain dealers; and WHEREAS, The original creation of the TGFA reflected the emergence of commerce and civilization on the frontier, while today the association gives businesses a way to succeed in a fast-paced environment through market protection, representation, education, networking, and member programs; now with more than 500 member firms, the association is one of the most diverse agricultural organizations in the state, and it is appropriate to take this opportunity to honor it; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby recognize April 26, 2005, as Texas Grain & Feed Association Day at the State Capitol and extend to the association's members sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the Texas Grain & Feed Association as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
