R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Dr. John Phillip Toelkes of Kingsville is retiring
from his position as the veterinarian for King Ranch, bringing to a
close a tenure with that South Texas enterprise that has spanned
nearly three decades; and
WHEREAS, Since 1978, Dr. Toelkes has served as the
veterinarian of one of the largest working ranches in the country;
not only responsible for the health and well-being of King Ranch's
livestock, he has also managed its quarter horses and their
breeding program and implemented the continuing education of
livestock personnel; and
WHEREAS, Named an Outstanding Alumnus of the Texas A&M
University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2005, Dr. Toelkes has
enjoyed a long and distinguished career in veterinary medicine; he
has practiced alone and in partnerships at clinics throughout
Texas, Oklahoma, and Arizona, garnered valuable experience while
working with the United States Department of Agriculture, and
gained an international perspective on his profession as a
veterinary assistant in Peru; moreover, he served his country as a
Hospital Corpsman, stationed at both the United States Naval
Hospital in Philadelphia and on the USS Henrico; and
WHEREAS, Currently a member of the city/county health board,
Dr. Toelkes has further supported his professional community as a
member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Texas
Veterinary Medical Association, American Association of Equine
Practitioners, American Association of Bovine Practitioners, and
the Academy of Veterinary Consultants; and
WHEREAS, For 27 years, Dr. John Toelkes has cared for the
horses and cattle of King Ranch and, in so doing, he has made an
invaluable contribution to the culture, heritage, and economy of
the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. John Phillip Toelkes on his
retirement as the veterinarian for King Ranch and extend to him
sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Dr. Toelkes as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
