R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Vivian Leigh Lewis of Austin has devoted 30 years to
serving as a social worker specializing in preventing child abuse,
a significant and impressive commitment in a demanding profession,
and it is a pleasure to commend her as she begins her 31st year in
the social services industry; and
WHEREAS, A 1973 graduate of the former Southwest Texas State
University, Ms. Lewis became a certified secondary education
teacher that same year; she began her career as a Social Worker II
with the Travis County Child Welfare Unit and remains focused on
improving and saving the lives of vulnerable children even as she
enters her fourth decade in the field; and
WHEREAS, After several years of affiliation with state
agencies specializing in protecting the rights of children, Ms.
Lewis founded the Orion Center in 1986; the leadership and
management skills she developed during her service with the state
and as a part-time private practitioner have enabled this vital
operation to successfully serve the public for nearly 20 years; and
WHEREAS, The Orion Center treats offenders and victims of
violent crimes, specializing in family reunification; danger risk
assessment; assessment of recantation, false accusation, and/or
false denial issues in cases of sexual assault; and specialized sex
offender treatment; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Lewis is the recipient of numerous awards and
accolades for her progressive and influential work; in addition,
she has served on multiple boards, task forces, and committees and
has authored numerous books and articles; her efforts are truly
extraordinary and have helped immeasurably to advance the study and
treatment of sex offenders and other violent criminals; and
WHEREAS, Thanks to the expertise and experience of Ms. Lewis,
countless individuals and their families have moved forward after
experiencing emotional and/or physical trauma in their lives, and
the citizens of Austin truly are fortunate to have such a dedicated
individual living and working among them; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby honor Vivian Leigh Lewis for her 30 years of
exceptional service as a social worker and praise her for her
positive contributions to the citizens of the Lone Star State; and,
be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Ms. Lewis as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
