R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, After 35 years of service in the Dallas Independent School District, John Parker is retiring from his position with Sunset High School, an inner city school, where he has taught for more than three decades; and WHEREAS, Known in Dallas as an outstanding teacher, Mr. Parker motivates his students to succeed inside the classroom and beyond; his marketing education students have consistently excelled in state and national competitions, and most of his students attend college after graduation; and WHEREAS, With the founding of the New York Field Studies and Leadership Development Program, Mr. Parker has provided students with a hands-on experience in the business world; for the past 14 years, the program has offered Sunset's cooperative education students the opportunity to study the country's economic system by traveling to New York, where they attend workshops and seminars with business leaders and entrepreneurs; over the years, Mr. Parker has made this exceptional experience possible by raising the necessary funds and making travel arrangements for more than 400 students; and WHEREAS, This esteemed educator has served as president of the Texas DECA Board of Directors and as a member of the Sunset High School Site Based Decision Making Board; he has received numerous awards, including the Outstanding Marketing Teacher of the Year award and the Golden Oak Award from the Oak Cliff Chamber of Commerce; and WHEREAS, Above all, John Parker is a loyal friend and surrogate father to many of his students, who greatly benefit from his support and guidance; his contributions to education in Dallas are truly immeasurable, and he leaves Sunset High School with a legacy of professionalism and achievement and a host of friends and colleagues who wish him every happiness in this new chapter of his life; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby honor John Parker for his illustrious career in education and extend to him sincere best wishes for an enjoyable retirement; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Parker as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
