R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, For the past 18 years, citizens of Grand Prairie have taken part in an annual Cinco de Mayo celebration that has become a treasured tradition in the community among people of every ethnic heritage, and on April 30, 2005, the city's residents will once again join together for this notable occasion; and WHEREAS, Sponsored by the City of Grand Prairie, the Grand Prairie Independent School District, the Hispanic Association for Culture and Education, the Grand Prairie Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Jack-in-the-Box, Rooms to Go, Darden Restaurants, Wells Fargo, K-B Homes, Telefutura 49, Qdoba Mexican Grill, and Cuidado Casero Home Health and Hospice, the event pays tribute to this significant date in history while positively impacting the lives of area students through the donation of some $12,000 in scholarships; and WHEREAS, This year's celebration would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of Cinco de Mayo Committee of Grand Prairie members Francisco C. Carrillo, Gloria M. Carrillo, John J. Lopez, Susanna Ramirez, Liz Martin, Doug Beich, Joanna Cardoza, Lydia Arredondo, Bassam Odeh, Gerardo Contreras, Christine Gonzalez, Rebecca Shaw, Sylvia Baca, Gus Porras, and Nancy Bridges; and WHEREAS, Cinco de Mayo commemorates the stunning victory achieved by Mexican troops over an invading French army at the battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862; led by General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguin, an untrained militia of some 4,500 Mexicans routed 6,500 French soldiers, considered to be among the best military troops in the world; and WHEREAS, In celebrating Cinco de Mayo, we honor the ideals of freedom and self-determination and the willingness to take on seemingly overwhelming odds in behalf of a worthwhile cause, and it is a pleasure to join the citizens of Grand Prairie in observing this proud day in Mexican history, a day whose significance continues to speak to people around the world; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby recognize the 18th annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration in Grand Prairie and extend to all those involved sincere best wishes for a memorable event.
