R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Stuart Smith of Waco has become the first American
to complete an arduous series of feats known as the Adventure Grand
Slam; and
WHEREAS, International in scope, the slam involves scaling
the highest peak in each of the seven continents and trekking to
both the North and South Poles; Mr. Smith is believed to be only the
seventh individual in the world to accomplish this herculean
agenda; and
WHEREAS, After discovering a passion for mountain climbing on
the peaks in Colorado, Mr. Smith scored the first leg of the grand
slam in 1987, when he ascended Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania;
between 1995 and 2003, he conquered the rest of the Seven Summits,
including Mount McKinley and Mount Everest; he added the North Pole
to his list in April 2004, and he concluded his quest for the slam
the following December, when he reached the South Pole after a
725-mile, 56-day, cross-country ski expedition; and
WHEREAS, A native of San Diego, California, Mr. Smith
graduated summa cum laude from Baylor University with a bachelor's
degree in business administration in 1982, and he was awarded a law
degree with honors by The University of Texas at Austin in 1985;
board certified in civil appellate law, he is a partner in the firm
of Naman, Howell, Smith & Lee; and
WHEREAS, Over the course of his far-flung travels, Mr. Smith
has enjoyed the support of many individuals, including, especially,
his wife, Elizabeth; his exploits have also been followed
enthusiastically by the Rotary Club of Waco, of which he is a valued
member; and
WHEREAS, Among the most accomplished mountain climbers in the
nation, Stuart Smith has continually set and achieved the loftiest
of goals, and the Lone Star State is indeed proud to claim him as one
of its own; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Stuart Smith on becoming the first
American to complete the Adventure Grand Slam and extend to him
sincere best wishes for continued success in all his endeavors;
and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. Smith as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
