R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Bobby Morrow, world-renowned three gold medal
winner in the Track and Field Championships at the Olympic Games of
1956 held in Melbourne, Australia, will celebrate in 2006 the 50th
anniversary of his historic feat; and
WHEREAS, He was considered to be the "fastest human in the
world" because of his winning the 100-meter dash and also the
200-meter dash in a world record time of 20.75 seconds in the World
Olympics; and
WHEREAS, His accomplishments in the 100-meter dash, the
200-meter dash, and the 4 X 100 relay team at this world-class event
were heralded by the news media in every country of the world, and
he graced the covers of Life magazine, Sport Magazine, Track and
Field Magazine, and Sports Illustrated magazine, in which he was
named Sportsman of the Year; and
WHEREAS, He was awarded the prestigious Sullivan Award as the
top amateur athlete in the United States in 1957 by the New York
Athletic Association, was named Southwesterner of the Year by the
Texas Sports Writers Association, as well as the Amateur Athlete of
the Year by that organization, Athlete of the Year in 1956 by Sport
Magazine, Athlete of the Year in 1956 by a poll taken by the Knute
Rockne Foundation among the sportswriters and sportscasters of
America, and was listed in the Outstanding Young Men of America in
that special year; and
WHEREAS, Bobby Morrow grew up in the Rio Grande Valley, where
he graduated from San Benito High School as one of the premier
track-and-field high school athletes in America; and
WHEREAS, San Benito, Texas, named its new high school
gymnasium after Bobby Morrow; and
WHEREAS, The image of Bobby Morrow crossing the Olympic
finish line graces Coca-Cola playing cards and Kodak film boxes;
and
WHEREAS, The veteran sportswriter Maxwell Stiles of Los
Angeles named Bobby Morrow the greatest sprinter of all time; and
WHEREAS, He personally appeared on numerous radio and
television networks, including the syndicated Ed Sullivan Show and
What's My Line television show; and
WHEREAS, He has been inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of
Fame, the U.S. Track and Field Hall of Fame, the Texas Sports Hall
of Fame, the Helms Track and Field Hall of Fame, the National
Athletic Intercollegiate Association Hall of Fame, and the Abilene
Christian University Hall of Fame where he received his college
degree in 1958 and was a student listed in Who's Who among students
in American Colleges and Universities; and
WHEREAS, He was named one of the Nine Great Living Americans
by the United States Chamber of Commerce in 1957 and was received by
the President and Vice President of the United States and numerous
mayors and governors across America; and
WHEREAS, One of his three gold medals was given to the
Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.; another was given to
the Texas Sports Hall of Fame; and his third gold medal was given to
his alma mater, Abilene Christian University, and it has recently
been displayed in the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum's
Legends of Sports Exhibit in our state capital city; and
WHEREAS, He is the proud father of twins, Ron Morrow of
Euless, Texas, and Vicki Morrow Watson of Hurst, Texas, and another
daughter, Elizabeth Kelton of Austin, Texas, and he and his wife,
Judy, now reside in Sealy, Texas, near Houston; and
WHEREAS, He will be forever remembered as a one-of-a-kind
champion who brought fame to the great State of Texas and the United
States of America, which he represented in international
competitions, and he has been admired around the world by young and
old alike from all walks of life; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby salute Bobby Morrow for his lifetime
achievements upon the golden anniversary of his three gold medal
victories in the Melbourne, Australia, Olympic Games; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Bobby Morrow and his family as well as the libraries of
his hometown, his alma mater, and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.
