H.R. No. 1379


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, For nearly half a century, the Feria de las Flores pageant in Corpus Christi has raised scholarship money for deserving college-bound students, and LULAC Council No. 1 has admirably upheld this time-honored tradition; and WHEREAS, Created and organized by Joe Flores, the event has been sponsored by the council since its inaugural contest in 1959, when Abby Pina was crowned as the first Feria de las Flores queen; through the generous support of the South Texas business community, LULAC has distributed more than $1 million in scholarship funds to date to students throughout the Coastal Bend area; and WHEREAS, The competition's contestants are judged in six categories: beauty, personality, poise, costume, dance routine, and onstage question, and the event, which is designed to pay tribute to the heritage of Mexican American citizens, features music, dance, and dress that typify various regions south of the border; and WHEREAS, Joining last year's winner, reigning queen Marina Ramon, the talented individuals participating in this year's competition on July 23, 2005, are Sonya Adame, Amanda Arreola, Angela Balarin, Jacqueline Castellanos, Josette Gonzales, Jennifer Gonzalez, Jessica Gonzalez, Jeanette Rivera, Crystal Rodriguez, Tiffany Rosas, Teresa Sanchez, and Dionisia Torres; and WHEREAS, Through their involvement, these contestants have demonstrated great cultural pride and community spirit, and they may indeed look forward to bright and promising futures; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby commend Marina Ramon on her reign as the 2004 Queen of Feria de las Flores and extend to the 2005 contestants sincere best wishes for a memorable event; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the participants as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
