                                                                  H.R. No. 1401


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Dr. Charles Nelson, esteemed music educator, singing teacher, and illustrious singer who, in his 48-year teaching career, has taught students from elementary school through university and sung with more than 70 symphony orchestras in 49 states and 15 foreign countries, and who, in 1993, while Artist in Residence at Abilene Christian University, was recognized by Governor Ann Richards, invited to perform at the Governor's Mansion, and commended for his outstanding musical career; and WHEREAS, Dr. Nelson has compiled and edited a tribute to the notable musicians and teachers listed below, entitled Lest We Forget, which includes biographies and letters of tribute from hundreds of students who have directly benefited from those great mentors; and WHEREAS, Dr. Wilfred C. Bain; Dr. Ewell Porter; Mrs. Julia Dean Evans; Mr. Frank McKinley; Mr. Michael F. Johnstone; Mr. Gene Kenney; Dr. Lloyd Pfautsch; Mr. A. M. (Al) Autrey; Dr. B. R. (Bev) Henson; Dr. Ruth Whitlock; and Dr. Hugh Sanders--a pantheon of Texas choral directors, who, through their extraordinary devotion to musical excellence in choral singing, distinguished themselves by inspiring a myriad of talented students to dedicate their lives to the promotion and performance of choral art; and WHEREAS, Their dedication has resulted in the extraordinary growth of the Vocal Division of the Texas Music Educators Association and the establishment of the Texas Choral Directors Association, whose eminence is heralded nationally and internationally, bringing attention and honor to the State of Texas; and WHEREAS, Dan Wood, executive director of the Texas Choral Director's Association, and the administrative board of that organization officially recognized Lest We Forget at their state convention in San Antonio in July 2004; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature commend the outstanding work of those above named, and Dr. Nelson for recording their teaching prowess and bringing them to the attention of this body, the teaching profession of the State of Texas, and the general public; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Dr. Nelson, his family, and his friends as an expression of high regard from the Texas House of Representatives and that a copy of Lest We Forget be placed in the Official Texas State Archives.
