R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Residents of Taylor lost a beloved civic leader, neighbor, and friend with the passing of Jerry Leroy Mehevec on February 19, 2005, at the age of 64; and WHEREAS, Mr. Mehevec was born in Chicago on August 31, 1940; he served his country with distinction in the United States Air Force and held a notable tenure with Alcoa for 20 years before his retirement; and WHEREAS, A respected and active member of his community, Mr. Mehevec was elected to the position of Williamson County Commissioner, Precinct 4, in 1978, and he won reelection four times to serve his fellow residents in that capacity for two decades; his outstanding efforts in behalf of his hometown earned him the prestigious Straight Arrow Award from Common Cause of Williamson County; and WHEREAS, Dedicated to safeguarding the environment, he gained a CAPCO grant to start the county's recycling program, was a charter member of Keep Taylor Beautiful, and had a well-known personal philosophy to never pass up a piece of litter; and WHEREAS, Mr. Mehevec was also a charter member of Turn Around Taylor, a group that works diligently to eradicate drugs from local neighborhoods and heighten awareness of safety and other concerns relating to abandoned houses; he was also a valued congregant at Taylor Brethren Church, where he served on the Mission Board; and WHEREAS, Among his many worthy endeavors, this committed public servant helped to organize work crews and traveled to foreign countries to build hospitals, schools, and churches, participated in a ministry for shut-ins, and volunteered with Meals on Wheels; and WHEREAS, Mr. Mehevec was blessed with unshakable strength and an indomitable spirit that enabled him to bravely battle lung cancer; even while under great strain, he continued to demonstrate extraordinary kindness, helping to organize the Emergency Cancer Relief Fund to ease financial stress for those in need who suffer from this terrible illness; and WHEREAS, A man of rare integrity, compassion, and generosity, Jerry Mehevec dedicated his life to serving others, and his legacy of good works will continue to benefit countless individuals for years to come; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby honor the life of Jerry Leroy Mehevec and extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Anne Mehevec; to his daughter, Stacy Skrhak and her husband, Randy; to his son, Adam Mehevec and his wife, Monica; to his grandson, Dylan Mehevec; to his aunt, Annie Mucha; to his mother-in-law, Pauline Buenger; and to his many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Jerry Leroy Mehevec.
