H.R. No. 1461
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Raul Yzaguirre is the 2005 recipient of the Tejano
Democrats Lifetime Achievement Award for his lifelong commitment to
improving opportunities for the Hispanic community; and
WHEREAS, A native of San Juan, Mr. Yzaguirre honorably served
his country in the U.S. Air Force Medical Corps for four years after
graduating from PSJA High School; he received his bachelor's degree
from George Washington University and stayed in Washington, D.C.,
to work for the National Council of La Raza, a nonprofit
organization that aims to combat poverty and increase development
in Hispanic communities; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Yzaguirre expanded the council into one of the
most successful Hispanic organizations in the country with a
current operating budget of $28 million; when he stepped down as
president and CEO in December 2004, he enjoyed a long list of
accomplishments, including the restoration of benefits for legal
immigrants and the reduction of poverty among Hispanics through the
expansion of the Earned Income Tax Credit; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed gentleman has advocated an increase in
aid for small businesses, a larger allocation of money for
education, and a more responsible portrayal of Hispanics on
television and in movies; and
WHEREAS, Following his departure from the National Council of
La Raza, Mr. Yzaguirre continues to make his mark on the community
by lecturing at colleges and writing books; he also looks forward to
spending more time with his loving wife, six children, and six
grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, Representative Aaron Pena has justly recognized
Raul Yzaguirre by passing this resolution in his behalf during the
Regular Session of the 79th Texas Legislature; now, therefore, be
it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Raul Yzaguirre on his receipt of
the Tejano Democrats Lifetime Achievement Award and commend him for
his outstanding professional accomplishments and civic
contributions; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. Yzaguirre as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
