R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, American Stroke Month, sponsored by the American Stroke Association, is a nationwide effort to increase public awareness of the warning signs, symptoms, and risk factors associated with strokes; and WHEREAS, Strokes are the third leading cause of death in the United States, affecting approximately 700,000 Americans each year; this debilitating condition is a leading cause of serious long-term disability, and has impacted the lives of 4.7 million stroke survivors in the United States alone; and WHEREAS, A division of the American Heart Association, the American Stroke Association is encouraging all Americans to take the initiative to educate themselves about the symptoms of an impending stroke; these signs include: sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body, impaired vision, speech, and motor skills, sudden confusion, and severe headache; and WHEREAS, New and effective treatments have been developed to treat and minimize the severity of strokes, but the key to proper treatment is early detection; and WHEREAS, It is fitting that Texans join with citizens throughout the country to express their support for educating the public about strokes and advocating additional research to further advance treatment possibilities; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby recognize May 2005 as American Stroke Month and commend all those who are working to educate the public about this life-threatening condition.
