R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, For 40 years, Spring Woods High School of Houston
has provided high-quality educational opportunities to students in
the Spring Branch Independent School District; and
WHEREAS, Since its founding in 1965, the school has offered
innovative programs and has incorporated integrated technology
into the classroom to prepare students for careers in the 21st
century; and
WHEREAS, Located in a suburban area on 22 acres, the campus of
SWHS features 110 classrooms and a two-story learning media center;
the school's diverse population includes 2,000 students who
represent 39 countries and various socioeconomic backgrounds; and
WHEREAS, Many faculty and staff members have worked at the
school for more than 15 years, and the teachers often share
instructional strategies and curriculum innovations with their
contemporaries on other campuses; and
WHEREAS, Spring Woods was the first high school in the
district to implement accelerated block scheduling and offer
multimedia and extended algebra courses; through the daVinci
program, a school-to-work partnership, students learn marketable
skills under the guidance of a teacher and business mentor; and
WHEREAS, Known for its winning baseball team, the SWHS
Tigers, the school enjoys the leadership of Coach Charlie Maiorana,
an inductee into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame who has led the team
for 31 years with a record of 588 victories; the Mighty Tiger
Marching Band maintains its own excellent reputation and has earned
a string of Division One ratings at competitions across the state;
and
WHEREAS, Through the years, Spring Woods High School has
nurtured the minds and spirits of countless young people with its
dedicated faculty and evolving practices, and it is a privilege to
join in celebrating the rich history of this respected educational
institution; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby honor Spring Woods High School on its 40th
anniversary and extend to its current and former faculty, staff,
and students sincere best wishes for a memorable observance; and,
be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the school as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
