R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The city of Plano has honored a respected area couple with the dedication of the Allan K. and Carolyn H. Bird Education Center, and Dr. and Mrs. Bird are indeed deserving of special recognition for their contributions to public education in their community; and WHEREAS, A professor at Texas Woman's University, Allan Bird is the longest-serving school board member in the history of the Plano Independent School District; elected in 1981, he served on the board until 1993, including a tenure as president from 1985 to 1992; in 1996, he was appointed to fill a vacancy and was reelected that spring; and WHEREAS, Carolyn Bird has also diligently worked to benefit Plano schools; her children all are graduates of the Plano school system, and she has provided invaluable and unstinting support to her husband throughout his many years of service on the school board; and WHEREAS, The Allan K. and Carolyn H. Bird Education Center houses four programs designed to help underserved student populations: the Special Programs Center K-8, Practical Parent Education, the School-Age Parent Program, and the Even Start Program; and WHEREAS, The curricula in these innovative programs have already had a positive and profound effect on the lives of Plano students, and with the support of individuals such as Allan and Carolyn Bird, the Plano school system will continue to help its students succeed; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby recognize the dedication of the Allan K. and Carolyn H. Bird Education Center in Plano and commend Dr. and Mrs. Bird for their continuing efforts in support of public education in Plano; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Dr. and Mrs. Bird as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
