H.R. No. 1513


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Texas State Technical College celebrated the 40th anniversary of its founding on April 22, 2005, and this significant milestone provides a fitting opportunity to take note of the history of this important institution; and WHEREAS, Forty years ago, Governor John B. Connally signed a bill creating TSTC on the 2,100-acre site of a deactivated U.S. Air Force base near Bellmead; the establishment of the new school was a response to the growing demand for a state-sponsored workforce training program in Central Texas; and WHEREAS, Initially called the James Connally Technical Institute of Texas A&M University, the Waco campus first conducted classes in 1966 with an enrollment of 70 students; three years later, the school separated from A&M and became an independent state system, and today the enrollment has reached more than 10,000 students in colleges in Harlingen and Marshall, as well as in Waco, and in West Texas campuses in Abilene, Breckenridge, Brownwood, and Sweetwater; and WHEREAS, In partnership with business and industry, governmental agencies, and other educational institutions, TSTC is effectively helping Texas meet the high-tech challenges of today's global economy while providing superior training for its students, who graduate with exceptional skills immediately applicable to a productive future; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Texas State Technical College on the occasion of its 40th anniversary and extend to all those associated with this fine institution sincere best wishes for continued success and achievement; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the school as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
