R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The students of Kiker Elementary School in Austin
have demonstrated tremendous generosity of spirit, and their
efforts in behalf of wounded U.S. soldiers are indeed commendable;
and
WHEREAS, In January 2005, Pamela Walsh shared with the school
the story of Texas Air National Guard Major Scott Galliardt, a
critical flight nurse serving with a Critical Care Air Transport
Team; during his time overseas, this brave Texan has attended to the
needs of injured troops on the journey from the battlefield in Iraq
to health care facilities in Germany or back to the United States;
and
WHEREAS, Inspired by the noble service of Major Scott, as he
is affectionately known by Kiker students, fourth-grade teacher and
student council sponsor Melody Crowther presented the Kiker Student
Council with his story; the body voted to create "DVDs and Stuff for
Wounded Soldiers," a service project that called on students to
donate movies, playing cards, and toiletries for the courageous men
and women who had been hurt while serving in Iraq; and
WHEREAS, The school came together to collect more than 150
DVDs as well as student drawings, boxes of personal items, and
useful supplies; local businesses, including Maudie's Hacienda and
the Postal Annex, also contributed by helping to pay for shipping
expenses; and
WHEREAS, In these troubled times, it is inspiring to see
young people graciously lending a hand to those in need; the
noteworthy boys and girls of Kiker Elementary have positively
affected the lives of U.S. soldiers who they have never met, and
they are truly deserving of special recognition for their
thoughtful contributions; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby recognize the students of Kiker Elementary
School for their efforts in behalf of our wounded troops and commend
them for their kindness and goodwill; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the school as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
