H.R. No. 1519
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The James V Allred Prison Unit of the Texas
Department of Criminal Justice is commemorating the 10th
anniversary of its founding in June 2005; and
WHEREAS, Situated on approximately 320 acres in Iowa Park,
near Wichita Falls, the prison is named for two-term Texas governor
James V Allred, a Wichita Falls lawyer who also served the state as
attorney general; and
WHEREAS, The maximum-security section of the Allred Unit, the
first part of the facility to be built, opened in June 1995 with an
offender capacity of 2,832; in February 1999, a maximum-custody,
high-security building, able to house 1,298 offenders, was added to
the complex; and
WHEREAS, Staffed by approximately 1,000 security and
nonsecurity employees, the Allred Unit has provided a major
economic stimulus to Wichita County; and
WHEREAS, Under the direction of Senior Warden Danny Horton
and Assistant Warden James Mooneyham, the Allred Unit plays a
significant role in the Texas criminal justice system; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby recognize the James V Allred Unit on the
occasion of its 10th anniversary and extend appreciation to the
administrators and staff of the unit for their service to the Lone
Star State.
