R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The city of Mineola has deservedly been designated a Preserve America community by First Lady Laura Bush; and WHEREAS, The Preserve America initiative is a program administered by the Department of the Interior and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation in behalf of the Office of the First Lady to encourage and support community efforts to safeguard the nation's cultural and natural heritage; the goals of the program include increasing a collective knowledge of the country's past, strengthening regional identities and pride, advocating local participation in preservation activities, and supporting the economic vitality of our communities; and WHEREAS, Mineola joins 36 other Texas towns, such as Nacogdoches, Waxahachie, Granbury, Georgetown, Dallas, and Kerrville, awarded the designation and will qualify for grant funds ranging from $50,000 to $250,000; other benefits of the program include the use of the Preserve America logo on signs and promotional materials, notification to tourism offices, media, and visitors bureaus, and a listing on a web-based directory of heritage tourism destinations; and WHEREAS, Residents of Mineola continue to play an integral role in preserving the character and history of their vibrant town, and it is a pleasure to join the First Lady in honoring their remarkable accomplishments; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate the city of Mineola on its designation as a Preserve America community and extend to all its citizens sincere best wishes for continued success and achievement.
