R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Scott Zesch is an author of immense ability and
integrity, and he is most deserving of special legislative
recognition; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Zesch's second book, The Captured: A True Story
of Abduction by Indians on the Texas Frontier, was published in
November 2004; in the brief six months following its release, the
work has earned the TCU Texas Book Award and been a selection of the
Book of the Month Club, History Book Club, Literary Guild Book Club,
Doubleday Book Club, and Quality Paperback Book Club; and
WHEREAS, The strong descriptive and narrative skills of this
distinguished Texan are well utilized in The Captured, which
follows the lives of nine children who were abducted by Native
American tribes in the late 19th century; and
WHEREAS, His own family history first inspired Mr. Zesch to
tell this fascinating tale, as his great-great-great uncle, Adolph
Korn, was kidnapped by Comanche Indians as a child; and
WHEREAS, In addition to his writing, Mr. Zesch has become a
popular lecturer on the subject of Indian captivity, speaking at
Yale, SMU, the Texas Book Festival, and Texas Public Radio, with
presentations scheduled at the New York Public Library and the
National Archives; and
WHEREAS, A native of Mason County, he is a graduate of Texas
A&M University and Harvard Law School; after college he went on to
join the Peace Corps, where he taught school in a rural village in
Kenya; and
WHEREAS, Through his writing, Scott Zesch has given countless
readers an opportunity to explore the reality of an era that is
frequently shrouded in myth, and he has shown that a truthful,
accurate portrayal of history can be entertaining as well as
enlightening; in doing this, he has ensured that the rich and
colorful history of the Lone Star State will be preserved for future
generations, but perhaps more importantly, he has created
historical works that future Texans will be eager to read; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby commend Scott Zesch for his exceptional literary
contributions and extend to him best wishes in his future
endeavors; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. Zesch as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
