R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Memories of a life filled with many joyful times and meaningful accomplishments may help to comfort the family and friends of Cubie Faye Webster Evans of Dallas, who passed away on April 19, 2005, at the age of 80; and WHEREAS, Born to Hayward and Della Webster on January 20, 1925, Mrs. Evans graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and earned a bachelor's degree from Prairie View A&M University and a master's degree from Texas Woman's University; and WHEREAS, The beloved wife of Henry Evans, Jr., Mrs. Evans was proud of her role as matriarch of a close-knit and loving family, and she cherished her four children and seven grandchildren; and WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan enjoyed a 41-year career with the Dallas Independent School District that began in 1949 when she taught kindergarten through third grade at H. S. Thompson Elementary School; throughout the years, she ably served Dallas youth as a classroom teacher at a number of elementary schools and later as a district administrator, training teachers and writing curriculum; her distinguished tenure as an educator ended in 1990 with her retirement as principal at Erasmo Seguin Community Learning Center, a position she held for more than a decade; and WHEREAS, Outside the classroom, Mrs. Evans was an integral part of her community and benefited numerous organizations with her membership; a breast cancer survivor, she gave of her time and talents to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the American Cancer Society's Black American Community Connection, which honored her for her important work in promoting cancer screening and education; moreover, she was a valued member of the African American Museum, the Black Academy of Arts and Letters, K. B. Polk Recreation Center, and the Good Street Baptist Church, where she attended services for a half-century; and WHEREAS, Those fortunate enough to have known Cubie Faye Evans will remember her zest for life and her dedication to her family and her community; although she will be greatly missed, her legacy will live on in the kindness and support she offered to her loved ones and in the guidance and leadership she provided to the countless young Texans she taught and mentored through the years; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Cubie Faye Webster Evans and extend deepest sympathy to the members of her family: to her children, Donald Lawrence Evans, Michelle Evans Chatham and her husband, Wayne, Angela Evans Whorton and her husband, Humphrey, and Mark Webster Evans and his wife, Tanya; to her grandchildren, Destiny Jamil, CraigLynne, and Dawn Lauren Evans, Ashley Nicole and Candace Cecile Chatham, and Ashley Rayneshia Smart and Margan Eliz Evans; and to her other relatives and friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Cubie Faye Webster Evans.
