R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Austin College in Sherman observed a very special
event in the history of the institution in March 2005 with the
establishment of the Austin College Leadership Award; and
WHEREAS, A tangible example of the institution's commitment
to leadership, this prestigious accolade is designed to acknowledge
outstanding individuals who have applied their leadership talents
to make a positive impact on society locally, nationally, or
internationally; and
WHEREAS, Honorees will demonstrate the values inherent in the
college, which are responsibility, respect, caring, gratitude, and
service; moreover, recipients will exemplify the principles of
servant leadership by taking a courageous stand on a public policy
issue that advances a humanitarian or educational purpose, serving
the youth of a community to improve the quality of health,
educational, or community services, or creating opportunities for
young people that help them enhance their educational experience
and move to a new level of service to society; and
WHEREAS, The first recipient of the leadership award will be
announced in March 2006; in addition to receiving a cash prize of
$100,000, the individual will visit the Austin College campus to
speak to community leaders and interact with students and faculty;
and
WHEREAS, The Austin College Leadership Award will honor those
who show through their actions an abiding commitment to creating a
brighter future for their fellow citizens, and this notable aim is
truly deserving of acknowledgment; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby commemorate the establishment of the Austin
College Leadership Award and commend all those who have worked to
bring this significant endeavor to fruition; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Austin College as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
