R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Baylor College of Dentistry, formerly State Dental College, was founded on October 3, 1905, when it opened its doors to 40 students in several rooms above a grocery store in downtown Dallas; and WHEREAS, This private institution, originally chartered by the State of Texas, became a part of Baylor University in 1971 and eventually merged with The Texas A&M University System; one of the founding member schools of The Texas A&M University System Health Science Center, the college combines its long-standing emphasis on service with A&M's land-grant mission of service to all Texans; and WHEREAS, Baylor College of Dentistry is the only dental school in North Texas, and it offers multiple degree programs, including a doctoral degree in dental surgery, a doctoral degree in biomedical sciences, and postdoctoral degrees in dental specialties; the college's Caruth School of Dental Hygiene also offers bachelor's and master's degree programs; and WHEREAS, This esteemed college has graduated 8,000 dentists and dental hygienists since its founding, and has developed an international reputation for educating outstanding clinicians and for nurturing faculty-led research; more than half of the dentists currently practicing in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, and almost one-third of all dentists in the state are Baylor alumni; and WHEREAS, The largest single oral health care provider in North Texas, the college is home to 10 dental and dental hygiene clinics and several specialized patient-care centers; in addition, faculty, staff, and students annually provide educational programs, oral examinations, and oral screenings to 133,000 schoolchildren, senior citizens, and community residents; and WHEREAS, Baylor College of Dentistry serves as a resource for all citizens of Texas and is committed to promoting oral health as a key component of complete physical health; on the occasion of the school's centennial, it is most appropriate to recognize the contributions of current and former faculty, staff, and students of this notable institution; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate the Baylor College of Dentistry on its 100th anniversary and extend to all those associated with the school sincere best wishes for a memorable observance; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the college as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
