R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Family and friends deeply mourned the passing of Grand Prairie Police Sergeant Gregory Lei Hunter on June 18, 2004, and now seek to still the pain of their loss by remembering his strength, courage, and spirit; and WHEREAS, Sergeant Hunter lost his life while bravely assisting a fellow officer, Bruce Seix, during a shooting in a parking lot near Interstate 20; and WHEREAS, Born on October 1, 1949, in New York City, Sergeant Hunter moved to Texas to play basketball for Ranger Junior College and The University of Texas at Arlington; he earned his bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Dallas Baptist University and joined the Grand Prairie Police Department as the first African American officer hired by the city to be commissioned by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement; and WHEREAS, During his nearly 30-year tenure in law enforcement, Sergeant Hunter worked in various departments, including field operations, CID, special investigations/narcotics, personnel and training, and the Tarrant County task force; a mentor to many officers, rookies, and civilian employees, he served as a patrol sergeant at the time of his untimely passing; and WHEREAS, Honored for his accomplishments in law enforcement, this esteemed professional earned numerous performance and service awards and received 31 letters of commendation from residents of Grand Prairie, fellow officers, and the Boy Scouts of America; and WHEREAS, A loving father and husband, Sergeant Hunter was a deeply humble and spiritual man; he was a much-treasured member of his community and will be missed by all those who were privileged to know him and by those who were touched by his deep commitment to protecting the citizens of our state; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Gregory Lei Hunter and extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Denise; to his daughters, Erin, Lindsay, and Kimberly; to his son, Greg; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Sergeant Gregory Hunter.
