R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The celebration of Asian–Pacific American Heritage Month in May 2005 provides an opportunity to recognize the rich cultural heritage and significant contributions of Asian–Pacific Americans in the State of Texas; and WHEREAS, Asian–Pacific American Heritage Month is an annual observance that began as a weeklong event in 1979; the week was expanded to a month's duration after President George H. W. Bush signed Public Law 102-450 on October 23, 1992, permanently establishing the month of May as the time to honor the achievements of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States; and WHEREAS, May has special significance for the Asian–Pacific American community, as the first Japanese immigrants arrived in the United States on May 7, 1843, and the transcontinental railroad, which was primarily built by Chinese immigrants, was completed on May 10, 1869; and WHEREAS, Asian–Pacific Americans have been a significant part of the population of this nation and of Texas for many years, and the celebration of Asian–Pacific American Heritage Month acknowledges and promotes the immeasurable benefits of a truly diverse society; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature hereby recognize May 2005 as Asian–Pacific American Heritage Month and encourage all citizens to learn more about the history and contributions of Asian–Pacific Americans in the Lone Star State.
