H.R. No. 1635
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The well-being of the people of Texas depends on
economic prosperity throughout the state, and businesses that
employ Texans and contribute to local communities are important
components of a healthy economy and a successful future; and
WHEREAS, Wal-Mart is opening a new Supercenter in Weslaco on
May 18, 2005; the more than 200,000-square-foot store will create
approximately 270 additional jobs for residents of this south Texas
town, bringing the total area employment by the company to 500;
since its first location opened in the state in 1975, Wal-Mart has
employed nearly 140,000 Texans; and
WHEREAS, In addition to adding to the economic vitality of
the region, Wal-Mart is donating $13,000 to local organizations and
charities, including the fire department, the public library, the
Lower Rio Grande Valley Nature Center, the Weslaco Bi-Cultural
Museum Society, and the Weslaco Independent School District, to
name but a few; and
WHEREAS, Bringing a wealth of opportunity to the area, the
new Wal-Mart will surely enrich the lives of local residents, and
all those associated with the store's opening indeed merit special
recognition; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby commemorate the grand opening of the Wal-Mart
Supercenter in Weslaco and extend to all those associated with this
endeavor sincere best wishes for success.
