R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, A loving family and good friends were deeply
saddened by the death of Alvin M. Levine of Weslaco, who passed away
on May 2, 2005; and
WHEREAS, Born on October 29, 1936, in San Antonio, Mr. Levine
graduated from Weslaco High School and attended The University of
Texas at Austin, earning a degree in business administration and
marketing; he then accepted a position at Joske's department store
in San Antonio, but his two-year employment with the company was
interrupted with his service as a second lieutenant with the U.S.
Army Quartermaster Corps in Ft. Lee, Virginia; and
WHEREAS, After his military service, Mr. Levine joined his
parents in the family business on Weslaco's South Texas Boulevard;
after his father passed away, he assumed the position of president
and served in that capacity until 1998, when he retired; Levine's
Man Shop served Weslaco and the Rio Grande Valley faithfully for 66
years until March 2005, when it closed because of Mr. Levine's
illness; and
WHEREAS, This respected businessman also made significant
contributions to his community through his service as president of
the Weslaco Kiwanis Club and board member of the Weslaco Chamber of
Commerce and McAllen's Temple Emanuel; he was especially proud of
his work in the Rotary Club of Weslaco, which he served as president
for the 1995-1996 Rotary year and as the district governor's
representative from 1997-1998, in addition to having 15 years of
perfect attendance; and
WHEREAS, Al Levine was an esteemed entrepreneur, generous
civic leader, and good friend to many, and his spirit will live on
through his legacy of good works; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Alvin M. Levine and
extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife,
Marlou; to his son, Mark Levine and his wife, Allison; to his
daughter, Lisa Levine and her husband, Martin Kastenbaum; to his
granddaughters, Sarah and Rachel Levine; to his step-daughter, Emma
Sayavedra and her husband, Alfonso; and to his other relatives and
friends; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Alvin M.
Levine.
