R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Dunbar High School in Fort Worth marked the end of an
era when Coach Robert Hughes completed his illustrious tenure as
coach of the "Flying Wildcats"; and
WHEREAS, For nearly half a century, Coach Hughes has taught
young Texans the finer points of basketball while instilling in
them the lifelong lessons of good sportsmanship; he completes his
47th season with the most U.S. wins of any basketball coach in the
nation, boasting a record of 1,333 victories and only 264 losses;
and
WHEREAS, Coach Hughes has led teams to five state
championships, 25 district championships, and 30 consecutive
playoff appearances, and for his contributions, he has been
inducted into the National High School Hall of Fame, the Texas
Sports Hall of Fame, the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame,
and the Southwestern Athletic Conference Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his impressive career, Coach Hughes has
enjoyed the love and support of his wife, Jacquelyne, and his
family; he leaves behind a legacy characterized by tenacity,
passion, and commitment to excellence, and it is a pleasure to wish
him well as he begins the next chapter of his life; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature hereby honor Coach Robert Hughes on his retirement as
coach of the Dunbar High School basketball team and extend to him
best wishes for the future; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Coach Hughes as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
